Case Study - Eldapoint Delivers Sustainable, Multi-Purpose Building Solution

In collaboration with InBox Projects, Eldapoint project-managed, manufactured and delivered a state-of-the-art bike store and training facility to Cyclewise in the Lake District. Eldapoint stepped up to the challenge of being able to offer shipping container conversions to virtually any industry, and exceeded the client’s expectations with their solution, fabricated from four recycled 40ft shipping containers.

About Cyclewise: Situated in Whinlatter Forest, Cyclewise is an award-winning cycling shop, hire centre and rider training school, offering a diverse range of hardtail, full suspension, and electric mountain bikes. Their professional workshop keeps their rental bikes in perfect condition, as well as being able to offer customers repairs, servicing and installation of upgrades.

Project Background: Tasked with replacing an outdated shed, Cyclewise sought a solution that would not only meet their storage needs but also harmonize with the natural surroundings of the forest. The surge in cycling popularity necessitated a space that could accommodate the growing demand for bike hire and training services.

Key Features of the New Facility:

  • Sustainable Construction: The two-story building is crafted from four single-use recycled shipping containers, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices.
  • Increased Capacity: The innovative design effectively doubled the space for bike storage and introduced a dedicated training classroom, allowing Cyclewise to expand their course offerings.
  • Aesthetic Integration: The exterior features beautiful brown shiplap weatherboard cladding, blending seamlessly with the forest theme and natural surroundings of Whinlatter Forest.
  • Scenic Views: With nine strategically placed windows, including six on the first floor, the facility provides breathtaking views of the Cumbrian mountains and forest, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
  • Interior Specifications: The ground floor is equipped with a workshop, large bike storage area, and essential facilities, while the first floor boasts a timber-decked mezzanine with seating, a training center classroom, offices, and a secure storage room.

Design and Build Process:

  • Conceptualization: Utilising the very latest in design software, Eldapoint worked closely with InBox Projects to produce high-resolution visual renders for Cyclewise. These incorporated all of their structural, electrical, and plumbing specifications.
  • Container Transformation: Eldapoint sourced four used 40ft shipping containers, cutting apertures for windows, doors, and services. External cladding in brown shiplap weatherboard was then used to enhance the building’s aesthetic appeal.
  • Ground Floor: The ground floor containers were opened up to double the width, accommodating the workshop and bike storage. Checker (diamond) plate and Rockwool insulation were added for durability and insulation.
  • First Floor: Removal of side walls on each container expanded the space for the Cyclewise classroom. Structural elements, including steel pillars and roller shutters, were incorporated for support and functionality, and security.

Electrical Infrastructure: A full electrical installation, certified by NIC, was completed, featuring LED lighting, sockets, and heating elements strategically placed on both floors to cater for e-bike charging and operational needs.

Project Completion: Following meticulous planning and execution, the facility was ready for Cyclewise to move in, offering a modern and fully equipped space for their customers and staff to enjoy.

Conclusion: Cyclewise's new bike store and training centre stands as a testament to innovative design, sustainability, and the creative repurposing of shipping containers. The facility not only meets the immediate needs of Cyclewise but also contributes to the natural beauty and allure of Whinlatter Forest in the Lake District.
